killed, sean smith n benghazi and a lot of questions were raised, again today at the homeland security committee on the hill, about why marines are not present in a place, a mission like benghazi and, in fact, marines were not present in tripoli and the response from the administration has been, we don't have marines at all of these postings. you as the former am bass tore to iraq and other places know well the kind of security we have. first i wanted to show you, matthew olson from the national counterterrorism center acknowledging to the committee today for the first time that they do believe there was an al qaeda involvement. this wasn't simply a spontaneous response to a film trailer. let's watch this. >> a number of different elements appear to have been involved in the attack, including individuals connected to militant groups that are prevalent in eastern libya, particularly in the benghazi area, as well, we are looking at indications that individuals involved in the attack may have had connections to al qaeda or al qaeda's affiliates, in particular al qaeda and islamic mugrab.

americans were killed at the u.s. consulate in benghazi. u.s. officials have not arrested anyone directly linked to the attack. they have focused on members of the militia sympathetic to al qaeda. but the arrests they have made are of people outside that night but not having to do with the attack. arwa damon has been fighting for answers. it's been hard. she is in benghazi, and a few moments ago, i asked her how the investigation is going. >> reporter: it's been incredibly frustrating to try to get a straight answer from the government, because even within the government itself, we're still continuing to hear these conflicting accounts. how many people have actually been arrested? how many of them were associated with the attack? what sort of leads has the government come across? at this point in time, you still have the head of libya's general national congress effectively the country's president, saying that amongst those detained, there were some foreigners that are believed to have links to al qaeda. that this was a preplanned attack carried out by these extremist entities. and yet yo

at benghazi and the embassies around the world, the question is why does that small group of muslims, radical muslims, hate sinus >> they want power. i think it's really a struggle for power, something that's going on in nearly every country across the region. in libya, you have a huge number of people who are out with signs professing their support for not just chris stevens who lost his life, you know, supporting peace and our relationship, but you have them saying, look, we apologize. same thing in several other countries. many of the leaders have expressed the same sentiments. and so i think we need to understand that as our country has local dynamics, these countries have local dynamics, too. and you have an emerging democratic movement. you also have these old regime loyalists, soccer thugs in the case of egypt, and even these, you know, more religious extreme elements where they're jockeying for power. >> what is it about america? why do they attack so violently, these groups? >> america is a symbol, right? america is a symbol. look who's keeping it up now. nasrallah in lebanon saying
